Just Hours Away: Festival Of Leaves Returns To Downtown Front Royal Saturday

The wait is almost over for one of Front Royal’s biggest fall traditions.

The 54th Annual Festival of Leaves returns to Historic Downtown Front Royal on Saturday, Oct. 10, bringing more than 225 vendors, live entertainment, food, and thousands of visitors to the heart of town.

With the festival now just hours away, downtown businesses, vendors, nonprofit groups and organizers are preparing for a day that has become a centerpiece of the community’s fall calendar.

The Festival of Leaves has been a Front Royal tradition since 1971 and has been voted Best Annual Event for four consecutive years by readers of the Northern Virginia Daily.

The Front Royal Independent Business Alliance, or FRIBA, presents the festival and has served as its steward for the past five years.

Organizers work year-round with a volunteer planning committee, local businesses, sponsors, and community partners to put the event together while maintaining a tradition that has lasted more than half a century.

More Than A Street Festival

While more than 225 vendors will provide plenty to explore Saturday, organizers say the downtown itself is a major part of the experience.

Restaurants, shops, museums, galleries, breweries and other locally owned businesses throughout the Historic District will be participating.

Many will offer their own specials, demonstrations and activities, creating smaller “events within the event” throughout downtown.

That gives visitors a reason to venture beyond the main festival attractions and explore businesses and destinations throughout the Historic District.

The festival also provides nonprofit organizations and community groups an opportunity to meet residents, share information and take part in one of the town’s largest gatherings of the year.

More Than 15,000 Visitors Expected

The Festival of Leaves typically draws more than 15,000 visitors to Historic Downtown Front Royal each October.

That crowd creates a significant day for downtown restaurants, retailers, museums, and attractions, as well as the vendors participating in the festival.

Its economic impact also begins well before Saturday.

Organizers spend months preparing for the event, with investments in local marketing, entertainment, logistics, and event operations supporting businesses and service providers throughout the planning process.

Festival day then brings thousands of residents and visitors into a relatively concentrated area of Front Royal, introducing some attendees to downtown businesses they may not have visited before.

For FRIBA, that connection between the festival and the downtown business community has become an important part of the event.

A Tradition Dating Back To 1971

Much has changed in Front Royal since the first Festival of Leaves was held in 1971, but the basic idea of gathering downtown during the fall has endured.

Now in its 54th year, the festival combines that history with a large modern community event featuring vendors, entertainment, food, businesses, and local organizations.

The setting has also helped the festival maintain its identity.

Rather than taking place at a separate fairground or event venue, the Festival of Leaves unfolds in the middle of Front Royal’s Historic District, allowing visitors to move between festival activities and the businesses that call downtown home.

For those still making Saturday plans, there isn’t much longer to wait.
