Kids Civil War History Camp Returns to Cedar Creek Battlefield June 20
Young history enthusiasts ages 8 to 14 can step into the life of a Civil War soldier during the Kids Civil War History Camp on Saturday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cedar Creek Battlefield, 8437 Valley Pike in Middletown.
The daylong program, “The Army Recruit’s First Day in the Life of a Civil War Soldier,” includes infantry drill, cavalry basics, artillery instruction, camp life, and a 2 p.m. Grand Battle where the kids take on veteran reenactors — and the kids always win.
“The Kids History Camp is one of the most meaningful programs we offer,” said Charles Harbaugh IV, Mayor of Middletown and President of the Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation Board. “It brings history alive in a way that textbooks simply can’t. When children stand on the very ground where the Battle of Cedar Creek unfolded, learning from dedicated reenactors, they gain a deeper appreciation for our shared past and the sacrifices made here.”
Pre-registration is $40 through June 15. After June 15, walk-ons are $45. Space is limited to 55 recruits.
Parents should provide a bag lunch, water, bug spray, sunblock, and proper footwear. No sandals or open-toed shoes.
