New Partnership Enhances Swim Literacy for Individuals with Disabilities
In a significant move towards inclusivity and accessibility, Access Independence has teamed up with the 2 For 2 Foundation to launch a Swim Literacy program in Winchester. This initiative addresses a crucial need, considering the vast number of individuals globally who face challenges due to vision and hearing impairments, as well as other disabilities.
The collaboration between these two non-profits is set to empower individuals with disabilities by providing them with proper swim instruction and the necessary equipment. This initiative is particularly crucial as nearly one-third of the world’s population suffers from vision complications, and about 6% suffer from hearing loss. Additionally, the elderly often face disorientation while swimming.
Charles Harbaugh, alongside Shelly Lee and her Shelly Lee Swim Literacy Fund, is spearheading this program. The project will utilize local water facilities and volunteer instructors to conduct swim lessons. During the summer, lessons will be available in Frederick and Clarke County parks, taught by trained Red Cross swim instructors. The 2 For 2 Foundation is also actively fundraising to provide the necessary apparatus and financial assistance to those in need.
Recognizing the importance of swimming as a life-saving skill, the program aims to overcome the barriers of physical challenges, access, and financial constraints that prevent over 50% of the population from learning to swim. Shelly Lee, a retired PE teacher and dedicated volunteer, emphasized the mental and physical benefits of swimming, extending beyond recreation and sports.
The program plans to utilize a range of equipment to cater to various needs, including vibrating headband devices for the visually impaired, flotation devices, lane markers with light and sound, Braille displays, and more. These technologies aim to offer freedom and safety for recreational and competitive swimming.
This partnership is not just about teaching swimming – it’s about ensuring inclusivity and equal access to an essential life skill. Access Independence and the 2 For 2 Foundation are inviting donations and grants to kickstart this ambitious project. For more information or to contribute, visit www.2for2foundation.org.
