Norma Jean (Markle) Freschi (1933 – 2026)

Norma Jean (Markle) Freschi of Front Royal, Virginia, passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Monday, September 7.

Norma was born on November 4, 1933, to the late Richard Kenneth Bryan Markle and Helen Catherine Markle. She was the oldest of seven children.

Norma was a woman of extraordinary strength, resilience, and deep devotion to her family. Born legally blind, she spent her life quietly defying limits, turning every challenge into a testament to her independent spirit and generous heart.

Her journey of independence began early. At 12, she began attending a school for the blind. She went on to build a career as a typist for Cunard Cruise Lines.

At a New Year’s Eve party, Norma met her future husband, Jim, starting a beautiful chapter together. They married in 1958, settled in northern VA, and welcomed their two daughters, Kristine and Karen.

Norma poured her heart into running her household, never allowing her visual impairment to hold her back from creating a warm, vibrant home. A woman of immense creative talent, she was an exceptional seamstress who lovingly crafted clothes for her young daughters. Her hands were rarely still—she crocheted countless blankets, gifting them to family, friends, new babies, and especially her cherished grandchildren.

Norma’s warmth and vibrant personality earned her a wide circle of cherished friends throughout her life. She was happiest when surrounded by good company, and her family continues to be moved by the countless stories shared about her impact. Her laughter, kindness, and fun-loving nature left a lasting impression on everyone blessed to know her.

Following the passing of her beloved husband, Norma spent the last 20 years living with her daughter Kristine and son-in-law. This precious time let her be at the center of family life, watching her grandchildren grow from childhood into adulthood—a joy she treasured above all else.

In her final year and a half, Norma lived at Hidden Springs Senior Assisted Living, surrounded by compassionate staff and the constant, loving presence of her daughters and family, who ensured she felt cherished every day.

Norma is survived by her daughters, Kristine Stafira (husband Gregory) and Karen Freschi (partner Robert Sitch); her grandchildren, Erik Stafira (wife Jenna) and Katya Mills (husband Henry); and her great-grandchildren, Charles Stafira and Sadie Stafira. She is also survived by her siblings, Teresa Markle, Larry Markle, Francis Markle and Richard Markle.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, September 14, at St John’s Catholic Church, 120 W Main Street, Front Royal, VA.
