Rabid Cat Found in Page County Prompts Health Warning
The Lord Fairfax Health District has confirmed a case of rabies in a long-haired, black female cat found in the Bosley Trailer Park area on Bosley Drive, Stanley. The cat attacked two individuals before testing positive for rabies on November 22, 2024. Residents are urged to avoid contact with stray cats or other animals in the area and to report any interactions to their local health department.
Rabies, a deadly virus affecting the nervous system, is often spread through bites or saliva entering open wounds or mucous membranes. Without prompt medical treatment, rabies is fatal. The health department urges residents to take these precautions:
- Avoid contact with stray or wild animals, especially raccoons, foxes, skunks, or bats.
- Ensure pets and livestock are vaccinated against rabies.
- Do not feed stray animals or leave food outdoors.
- Report any bites, scratches, or unusual animal behavior immediately to the health department or veterinarian.
If exposed to a high-risk animal, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and contact a doctor or local health officials. For questions or to report concerns, the Page County Health Department can be reached at 540-743-6528 or 540-665-8611 after hours.
