Rally in the Shenandoah Valley: International Pool Tournament Comes to Front Royal
Front Royal is preparing to welcome the world of professional billiards once again as the second annual Rally in the Shenandoah Valley returns to On Cue Sports Bar & Grill from July 31 through August 2. The event, now recognized on the World Nineball Tour (WNT) calendar, will feature 64 players, including 20 ranked pros from across the globe—marking a major milestone for both the sport and the local community.
“This tournament is about more than just pool,” said Cole Haase, owner of On Cue and one of the event’s lead organizers. “We’ve got players flying in from Canada, Asia, Germany, and across Europe. It’s putting Front Royal on the map for international competition.”
Joining Haase in the studio were Chris Wilburn, tour director, and Madison Ortiz, a sports commentator and tournament promoter who will also serve as an event interviewer during match breaks. Together, the team has built a competition that not only attracts elite talent but also delivers a high-energy, family-friendly experience for spectators.
A Sport on the Rise
Though pool has long held a place in bars and recreation halls, Haase, Wilburn, and Ortiz spoke about its growth into a global sport, much like golf in its early years. “Last year, the top player made over $600,000,” Wilburn said. “With the rise of international sponsorships and high-stakes tournaments, pros can now make a career out of this.”
The three-day event will be held in On Cue’s second-floor tournament area, located at 206 E. Main Street in downtown Front Royal. The venue will be open to the public throughout the event, with limited free access for spectators. VIP seating has already sold out, but organizers are encouraging locals to stop in, especially during the early rounds.
“Even if you’re not a pool expert, you’ll have fun,” Ortiz said. “We’ll have merchandise booths, digital scoreboards, and even interviews after matches. We want everyone to feel welcome.”
Digital and Global Access
One major upgrade this year is the integration of Digital Pool, a platform that allows fans to follow matches live, view tournament brackets, and stream individual tables from anywhere in the world. “It’s high-tech,” Haase said. “You can log in, pick the table you want to watch, and enjoy the action from home.”
This level of access isn’t just for fans. It helps players stay organized and relaxed, allowing them to step away between matches and return when it’s their time to compete. “It’s more efficient,” Haase said. “And with help from local hotels and sponsors, we’ve made sure visiting players can focus on their game.”
Cash and Competition
With a $10,000 first-place prize, the tournament offers real stakes—especially for open-level and semi-pro players hoping to break into the upper ranks. “If you win three rounds on the winner’s side, you’re guaranteed a payout,” Haase noted. In total, the top 16 finishers will receive cash prizes, making the event competitive from start to finish.
Wilburn added that several standout junior players, including international youth champions from Sweden and Norway, are also participating. “They’re phenomenal,” he said. “Some of the best young talent you’ll see anywhere.”
Community Impact
Beyond the game itself, the Rally in the Shenandoah Valley is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy. With players, families, and fans traveling in for the event, hotels, restaurants, and shops throughout Front Royal will see increased traffic.
“It really adds up,” Haase said. “Visitors are booking rooms, dining out, and even taking in local attractions. We even partnered with a local golf course to offer discounts to players during their stay.”
On Cue itself is a hub of activity, with regular weekly specials and community events. From Taco Tuesday and Burger Monday to Coffee & Conversations, the venue has quickly become a gathering place for locals, civic groups, and professionals alike.
Haase and his wife, Danielle, who manages the kitchen and menu, have made a point of offering homemade meals using local ingredients. “We want it to be more than a pool hall,” Haase said. “It’s a community space.”
An Invitation to Front Royal
With events beginning each day at 10 a.m., and doors opening at 9 a.m., the Rally in the Shenandoah Valley offers an accessible and exciting way for residents and visitors alike to experience world-class competition. Whether you’re a casual fan or a seasoned player, the tournament promises three days of high-level play, personal stories, and global connections—all happening right on Main Street.
