Salvation Army Launches Holiday Programs in Front Royal – Meet the New Faces Behind the Mission
With the holiday season just around the corner, representatives from the Salvation Army share joyful updates on their mission, new leadership, and the many heartwarming programs bringing hope and support to families in Front Royal and the surrounding areas.
New Leadership in Town
Sam and Elizabeth Clark are the new officers leading the Front Royal Corps, having recently arrived from Bristol, Virginia. They’ve stepped in to continue the work and are already making an impact through expanded services and community outreach.
Marilee LaMattina, Regional Resource Development Director for the Salvation Army, joined the conversation to share insights on major giving, planned giving, and ways the community can support beyond the well-known red kettles.
“Many people don’t realize you can give stock, IRA distributions, or set up legacy gifts in your will. These options help sustain the work of the Salvation Army for years to come,” LaMattina explained.
Local Impact, Local Support
Sam Clark emphasized that all donations made through the Front Royal Salvation Army stay local, supporting food programs, emergency assistance, and seasonal initiatives such as the Angel Tree, Red Kettle Campaign, and the Red Shield Club.
“Every dollar we make in our thrift store or receive in donations goes right back into helping people right here in our community,” said Carr.
Angel Tree Program – Now in Its 46th Year
The Angel Tree program provides Christmas gifts for local children in need. Families can sign up through October at the church location at 357 Cloud Street. Community members can “adopt” an angel and shop for gifts, with any remaining needs being met by the Salvation Army team.
The Angel Tree program doesn’t mean you’re taking home a new family member — just their wish list. It’s your chance to play Santa and make a child’s Christmas a little more magical.
Red Kettle Campaign – Volunteers Needed
Bell-ringing season kicks off on November 15 at locations including Walmart and local ABC stores. Volunteers are needed in Front Royal, Luray, Strasburg, and across the area.
To sign up, visit RegisterToRing.com and choose your preferred time and location.
“There’s always an hour or two open that needs someone to step in. Just put on the apron, grab a bell, and make a difference,” said Elizabeth Carr.
Thanksgiving Meal – Everyone’s Welcome
The Salvation Army will host its annual Thanksgiving Dinner on Wednesday, November 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church. Last year, the event welcomed over 300 guests for a sit-down holiday meal.
“Our community comes together in incredible ways,” said LaMattina. “If you think no one’s going to show up — trust me, they do.”
Food Pantry & Social Services
Elizabeth Clark runs the food pantry out of the church, offering fresh food every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Demand has doubled since the Carrs’ arrival — from 154 families served in one month to 275 in the most recent.
“We’re not just handing out canned goods,” said Sam Clark. “We offer fresh fruits, cheese, bread — it’s about dignity and nutrition.”
Red Shield Club – More Than a Daycare
What was once the Boys and Girls Club is now the Red Shield Club, a structured after-school learning center based at E. Wilson Morrison Elementary School. With 72 children enrolled, the program runs from 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays and includes homework help, STEM lessons, and even culinary arts, funded in part by the United Way and the Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley.
“We’re already seeing better attendance and improved engagement among these kids,” noted LaMattina. “It’s amazing what structure, care, and one-on-one time can do.”
Final Thoughts
The Front Royal Salvation Army serves not only Warren County but also Page County, Rappahannock County, and the Town of Strasburg. The need across these areas continues to grow, but so does the community’s generosity.
Donations of all sizes—whether coins or bills—make a meaningful impact. And for those who prefer digital giving, each red kettle is equipped with a QR code, making it easy to contribute using a credit or debit card.
