Spring Ephemerals Take Center Stage at Sky Meadows Workshop
As the forests of Virginia awaken from winter, Sky Meadows State Park will welcome nature lovers for a special Spring Ephemerals Workshop on Sunday, April 13, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Hosted in the park’s historic Carriage Barn, this free guided experience is part of the Botany and Bloom Series and led by Virginia Master Naturalist Paul Guay of the Shenandoah Chapter.
Spring ephemerals—those brief but beautiful wildflowers that bloom before the forest canopy fully leafs out—are the stars of the day. Visitors will start with an engaging presentation inside the Carriage Barn, where Guay will cover the life cycle, pollinators, and unique adaptations of these delicate flowers. Participants will learn how to identify local favorites like toothwort, bloodroot, and other early bloomers that thrive in Virginia’s temperate hardwood forests.
Following the indoor session, the workshop heads outdoors for a 3-mile guided hike along Sky Meadows’ scenic forest-edge trails. Along the way, Guay will point out emerging plants and discuss their roles in the broader ecosystem. The trail is moderately easy, but participants are encouraged to dress for the weather, wear sturdy footwear, and bring water and lunch to enjoy along the route.
While registration is not required, it’s strongly encouraged to ensure enough materials and guidance for everyone. Those interested can sign up via Eventbrite.
The event is family-friendly, and children with an interest in nature are welcome to join the hike. All programming is included with the park’s standard $10 parking fee, and there are no additional costs to attend the workshop.
