St. John’s Drama Presents Summer Production of “The Phantom Tollbooth”

Families looking for a fun summer outing will soon have the chance to step into the imaginative world of The Phantom Tollbooth as St. John’s Drama brings the beloved children’s classic to the stage this July in Front Royal.

Based on Norton Juster’s well-known novel and adapted for the stage by Susan Nanus, the production follows the adventures of Milo, a bored young boy whose ordinary day changes when he discovers a mysterious tollbooth. After driving through it, Milo is transported to the magical Kingdom of Wisdom, where words and numbers come to life, and every encounter offers a new lesson.

Along his journey, Milo meets a cast of memorable characters, faces unusual challenges, and learns the value of curiosity, imagination, and learning. The story has remained a favorite for generations because of its clever humor, thoughtful themes, and sense of adventure.

St. John’s Drama says the production is designed to appeal to audiences of all ages, whether they are experiencing Milo’s story for the first time or revisiting a childhood favorite. One of the play’s best-known lines captures the spirit of the show: “So many things are possible, just as long as you don’t know they’re impossible.”

Performances will take place in Father Ruehl Hall at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, located at 120 W. Main Street in Front Royal.

Evening performances are scheduled for Friday, July 17, Saturday, July 18, and Monday, July 20, at 7 p.m. Matinee performances will be held on Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students, seniors ages 65 and older, and children ages 3 and up. A special $35 family ticket package is also available for parents and their minor children.

Tickets will be sold at the door on the day of each performance. Payment must be made by cash or check.
