Tiny Hippo Calf Becomes Global Sensation in Thailand
In Thailand, a tiny hippo with a big personality is capturing hearts worldwide. Born at a zoo in July, this chubby, pink-cheeked pygmy hippo calf has gained viral fame for her playful energy and fearless nature. Named Moo Deng, which translates to “Bouncy Pig,” she’s living up to her name with bouncy antics that have enchanted viewers across the globe.
Moo Deng’s popularity skyrocketed after videos showed her mimicking her mother’s eating habits, chasing after keepers, and even giving playful bites to her caregivers. The zoo hosted a public poll to name the spirited calf, and her playful nature and adorable antics have since made her the unofficial ambassador of her species.
Pygmy hippos like Moo Deng are much smaller and rarer than their more common hippo cousins. While an adult pygmy hippo weighs around 350 pounds, a common female hippo can reach up to 3,000 pounds. Unlike social, water-loving common hippos, pygmy hippos are solitary and prefer the cover of dense forest environments, spending much of their time alone in the wild. Only an estimated 2,000 of these endangered animals remain, mostly in the forests and swamps of West Africa, where they lead secretive, nocturnal lives.
Moo Deng’s sudden fame has raised awareness of her species, bringing attention to the conservation efforts needed to protect this adorable yet vulnerable animal.
