When the Sunday morning alarm sounded before 6:30 a.m. for the 6th and 7th grade Royal Fury Girl’s Travel Basketball Team, they hoped their ride from Warren County to Inwood, West Virginia would lead them to their second championship game of the weekend. The day before, they landed a 2nd place finish in the Winter League in Manassas, VA.
On Sunday evening, fourteen hours later, their happy parents pulled back in their driveways with smiling (though sleepy) first place champions in the back seats. Winning all four games (Game One: 26-10, Game Two: 34-12, Game Three: 45-0 and Game Four: 52-18), the giddy pre-teens took home medals, memories, and bellies full of Sheetz MTO snacks (their entertainment between court-time).
Coach Heath Gilbert was proud of his team’s efforts, “The girls began the weekend by placing 2ND in the 7/8th grade month long Winter League Round Robin & Tournament in Manassas, VA. They took a step further on Sunday in the Max Exposure Tournament in Inwood, WV by sweeping the competition by a combined score of 157-40. The coaches are very proud of the effort and passion the girls played with. We played tough man help defense and dominated the boards. The girls played unselfish offense finding the open teammate all tournament. Go Fury!” Assistant coaches Glen McGuire and John Lacombe were also thrilled with the victories and look forward to further success this season.
