Warren County High School Hall of Fame Opens Nominations and Prepares for Annual Golf Tournament

Published

on

Warren County High School is celebrating its athletic history with two exciting events this spring. The Lawrence “Sweeney” Shiflett Athletic Hall of Fame Committee has kicked off its 21st annual nomination month and is preparing for the popular golf tournament coming up in April.

March is Nomination Month

Throughout the month of March, the community is invited to nominate athletes, coaches, teams, or contributors for the Warren County High School–Lawrence “Sweeney” Shiflett Athletic Hall of Fame. This tradition helps recognize outstanding individuals who have made a lasting impact on Warren County athletics.

Anyone interested in nominating someone can find the nomination form online. Forms are available on the Hall of Fame website at https://sites.google.com/wcps.k12.va.us/wchshalloffame/home or on the school athletics site at https://warrencountyathletics.com.

Hall of Fame Committee members say this is a great opportunity to honor those whose talent, leadership, and dedication have helped shape the school’s athletic legacy.

A Look Back: Hall of Fame History

The Warren County High School Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2002 by former athletic director Buck Smith. The first inductee was Lawrence M. “Sweeney” Shiflett, whose name the Hall proudly carries today. In 2003, a formal committee was formed, including Lawrence Shiflett as Chair, Buck Smith, Charlie Dodge, Kip Ritenour from The Warren Sentinel, and then-Principal Ernestine Jordan. Together, they created the standards used to select athletes, coaches, and contributors for induction.

The Hall of Fame held its first full class induction in the fall of 2003 and has continued to recognize deserving individuals every year since. In 2022, oversight of the Hall was officially passed to the athletic administration at Warren County High School. Today, the Hall of Fame has grown to include 81 members—each representing a unique chapter in the school’s proud sports history.

21st Annual Hall of Fame Golf Tournament Set for April 13

The Hall of Fame celebration continues next month with the 21st Annual Golf Tournament. The event will be held Sunday, April 13, at the Shenandoah Valley Golf Club and is open to everyone who wants to join in the fun or support a great cause.

Golfers will enjoy a captain’s choice format with men’s, women’s, and mixed foursomes all welcome. The day begins with a buffet lunch at 12:00 p.m., followed by a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m.

Participants will compete for prizes awarded to the top three teams, plus special contests like longest drive, closest to the pin, and a putting challenge. A 50/50 raffle will also be part of the fun.

The tournament remains the Hall of Fame’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and organizers are currently looking for teams and sponsors to support the event. Team registration is $400, and individuals can sign up for $100. Payment is accepted by cash, check, or credit card at registration.

To register or become a sponsor, forms can be found online at the same websites listed above. Completed forms can be mailed or emailed to:
