In the bustling halls of WCHS, two innovative enterprises, Wildcats LIVE! and DECA Tailgaters, have carved a niche for themselves, achieving gold-level certification for the 2023-2024 school year. These school-based enterprises (SBEs) stand out as stellar examples of how hands-on learning can bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Set to be recognized at DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California, from April 27-30, 2024, these initiatives spotlight the essence of entrepreneurial education.

School-based enterprises offer more than just goods and services; they serve as real-world classrooms where students can immerse themselves in the essentials of marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. For over 40 years, DECA advisors have harnessed the power of SBEs to provide students with an educational experience that is both realistic and relevant, preparing them for future college and career endeavors.

Wildcats LIVE!, a sports media marketing venture, has been a game-changer in how school athletic events are shared with the community. Through partnerships with National Media Services/the Royal Examiner, Wildcats LIVE! not only live streams home athletic events but also creates professional gameday programs for varsity football games. Under the leadership of student managers Marshall Barton and Raymond Dingess, Wildcats LIVE! has flourished, offering unparalleled learning opportunities in event production and media management.

On the other side, DECA Tailgaters brings the joy of food to various school and community events. Managed by Ella Martin and Madison Wadas, this food service business has become synonymous with quality and innovation. From catering school functions to participating in community festivals, DECA Tailgaters provides hands-on experience in the food industry, teaching valuable lessons in customer relations, financial management, and team leadership.

Christopher Young, CAE, Chief Program Officer at DECA Inc., emphasizes the significance of DECA’s School-based Enterprise Certification Program. It’s not just about recognition; it’s about demonstrating the real-world application of classroom learning in a way that prepares students for their future. The success of Wildcats LIVE! and DECA Tailgaters is a testament to the program’s efficacy, showcasing how entrepreneurial education can shape tomorrow’s leaders.

DECA’s certification program, supported by renowned sponsors like Otis Spunkmeyer Inc. and Pop Chips/You Need This, highlights the importance of striving for excellence. As Wildcats LIVE! and DECA Tailgaters prepare to be honored on the national stage, their journey from classroom concepts to entrepreneurial success stories serves as an inspiration for aspiring students everywhere.

Join us in celebrating their achievements and the endless possibilities that come with practical learning and entrepreneurial spirit.
