How to Connect: Finding the Best Ways to Reach Out

Published

on

What’s your go-to method for connecting with people? For many of us, it’s texting. It’s low-risk, easy, and doesn’t impose on the other person’s time. But while texting is convenient, it’s also somewhat impersonal. It lacks the emotional nuance and tone of hearing someone’s voice or seeing their face, making it less ideal for meaningful conversations.

When to Pick Up the Phone

Sometimes, it’s worth it to “impose” on someone’s time by making a phone call. A call allows for real-time conversation and feedback; hearing a person’s voice adds emotional depth that a text can’t capture. When you have something important to discuss or want to establish or re-establish a friendship, a phone call can be far more effective than sending a message.

The Value of In-Person Visits

In today’s digital world, in-person visits are less common than they used to be when most social interactions happened face-to-face by necessity. However, seeing people in person is still an essential human need. Whenever possible, try to meet in person. Face-to-face interactions foster deeper connections, allowing for body language, shared experiences, and real emotional engagement.

Invest Your Time in Connection

The key to meaningful connections is investing your time. If an acquaintance invites you to lunch, make it a point to accept the invitation. If you want to connect or reconnect with someone, extend an invitation yourself. Your effort to build relationships will pay off in stronger, more fulfilling connections.

Remember, the quality of your relationships depends on how often you communicate and how you choose to do it. So, the next time you think about reaching out, consider whether a text is enough or if it’s time to pick up the phone or meet in person.
