Martial Arts Legend Shapes Lives in Front Royal, Re-Elected to Global Role

In Front Royal, a world-renowned martial artist has shaped lives with discipline, self-defense techniques, and timeless wisdom. Grandmaster H.Y. Kwon, a 10th-degree black belt and president of the World Martial Arts Grandmaster Federation, has been teaching a unique blend of martial arts at his academy, Kwon’s Champion School.

Grandmaster Kwon’s journey began in South Korea, where he started training at the age of five. A defining moment in his youth, where he discovered extraordinary strength to escape a dangerous situation, inspired his lifelong dedication to martial arts. “My Grandmaster explained that extraordinary strength comes out during emergencies,” Kwon said. “He told me, ‘With patience, concentration, and hard practice, you can call upon this strength whenever you choose.’”

Kwon’s passion for martial arts drove him to master multiple styles, including Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Kung Fu, Judo, Hapkido, Kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu, and weapons training. Today, his school teaches a comprehensive martial art called Hwar Do, blending the best techniques from these disciplines.

A School with a Vision

Kwon’s Champion School is more than a martial arts academy. It’s a place where students of all ages learn skills that extend beyond the mat. The school emphasizes values such as respect, responsibility, concentration, and self-discipline for children. “Tomorrow’s leaders are built today,” Kwon said. “We aim to help children strengthen leadership skills and make good decisions.”

The school’s children’s programs are carefully crafted to instill focus and confidence, helping students excel academically and socially. Through teamwork and discipline, young students learn how to handle stress and resolve conflicts—a foundation that helps them resist negative influences like drugs and peer pressure.

Adults, too, find value in Kwon’s teachings. The Hwar Do system focuses on self-defense and physical fitness, offering techniques to defend against larger opponents and even using everyday items as weapons. The step-by-step training method ensures accessibility for all skill levels, making martial arts an empowering and enriching experience.

Re-Elected to Lead on a Global Stage

Beyond his impact on the local community, Grandmaster Kwon continues to lead on the global stage. He was recently re-elected for a six-year term as President of the World Martial Arts Grandmasters Federation, a prestigious position that underscores Kwon’s expertise and leadership in martial arts worldwide.

The World Martial Arts Grandmasters Federation unites martial arts masters from across the globe to innovate techniques, foster collaboration, and uphold martial arts values. Kwon’s re-election reflects the trust and respect he has earned from peers worldwide.

“I’m honored to continue leading this incredible organization,” Kwon said. “It’s a privilege to work with so many talented masters and help advance the martial arts world.”

Despite his international commitments, Kwon remains dedicated to his students in Front Royal. His dual role as a local teacher and global leader highlights his unique ability to inspire and guide future martial artists at every level.

Global Influence, Local Impact

Though Grandmaster Kwon travels worldwide to teach and lead seminars, he remains deeply connected to the Front Royal community. “It’s an honor to teach here,” said Kwon. “This school is about improving lives—not just through self-defense, but by building confidence, reducing stress, and promoting health.”

His son, Master Eric Kwon, also a martial arts instructor, praises his father’s dedication. “He’s the teacher of teachers—a master of the masters,” Eric said. “It’s a privilege for this community to have someone of his caliber guiding them.”

Grandmaster Kwon trains rigorously, dedicating three hours daily to his personal practice. Even at an age when many might slow down, Kwon shows no signs of stopping. “I’ll continue training and teaching for as long as possible,” he said.

A Gem in the Community

Kwon’s Champion School has become a cornerstone in Front Royal, drawing students of all ages who seek to improve physically and mentally. Parents of young students often express gratitude for the values their children gain, while adults appreciate the health benefits and stress relief martial arts provide.

Having a world-renowned Grandmaster is a source of pride and inspiration for Front Royal. As Kwon continues to teach, create new techniques, and lead globally, he ensures that the lessons learned in his academy resonate far beyond its walls.
