Keep Your Feet Warm to Avoid Catching a Cold

Published

on

The chill of winter is here, and while feeling cold alone won’t cause a cold, keeping your feet warm might help you avoid one. Cardiff University’s Common Cold Center research suggests that icy feet can play a surprising role in making you more susceptible to catching a cold.

The Science Behind Cold Feet and Colds

According to researchers, very cold feet can trigger constriction of the blood vessels in your upper airways. This constriction can temporarily weaken your body’s defenses against viruses, making it easier for a cold to take hold if exposed.

While being chilly overall doesn’t directly lead to a cold, keeping your feet warm could be a simple and effective way to reduce your risk of getting sick.

Stay Warm, Stay Healthy

Protecting your feet from the cold is easier than you might think. Indoors, thick socks can help shield you from drafty floors while you relax. Outdoors, opt for warm, insulated footwear when braving frigid temperatures.

A small effort to keep your feet warm can go a long way toward staying comfortable and possibly avoiding a seasonal sniffle. So, cozy up and let your feet be the foundation of your winter wellness.
