A Feathered Comeback: Explore the Bluebird Trail at Sky Meadows State Park

Published

on

On Saturday, June 14, visitors to Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane will have a chance to take a closer look at one of nature’s greatest comeback stories—the recovery of the Eastern Bluebird. From 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., Master Naturalist Lisa Hinson will guide a special walk along one of the park’s bluebird trails, part of the park’s ongoing Sensory Explorers’ Trail Summer Series.

Hinson will lead participants past the park’s signature bluebird nest boxes, explaining how this vibrant species, once in sharp decline, has been steadily making its return thanks to conservation efforts like the trail monitoring program at Sky Meadows. Participants will learn about the challenges the birds once faced—from habitat loss to competition with invasive species—and how simple nest boxes have played a critical role in their resurgence.

The bluebird trail walk is more than just a nature hike; it’s a behind-the-scenes look at hands-on conservation. Visitors may even get the rare opportunity to peek into an active nesting box, depending on timing and trail conditions.

The event will begin at the new Virginia Master Naturalist kiosk, located just to the left of the picnic area across from the Sensory Explorers’ Trailhead. This trail is accessible for self-guided walks daily and includes features for visitors who are blind or visually impaired.

While registration for the walk is not required, participants are encouraged to reserve a spot through Sky Meadows’ Eventbrite page. Standard park admission ($10 per vehicle) applies.

Children are welcome, making this a great outing for families curious about birds, conservation, or a day outdoors. For questions or more information, contact Sky Meadows at 540-592-3556 or email SkyMeadows@dcr.virginia.gov.

More about the park and its programs can be found at Sky Meadows State Park.
