Homemade Apple Butter: A Sweet Taste of Fall

Published

on

There’s nothing quite like the aroma of apples slowly simmering with warm spices to fill your kitchen with the essence of autumn. Apple butter, smoother and richer than applesauce, is a timeless spread that pairs beautifully with toast, biscuits, pancakes—or simply by the spoonful. With just a few ingredients and some patience, you can create a jar of pure seasonal delight.

Ingredients

  • 5 pounds (about 12–14) Cortland, Lobo, or McIntosh apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch ground cloves (optional)
  • 1 pinch salt

Directions

  1. Cook the apples. Place chopped apples and water in a large saucepan. Cover and cook over medium heat for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until apples are soft and tender.
  2. Make the puree. Transfer apples to a food processor and blend until smooth. Return the puree to the saucepan.
  3. Add flavor. Stir in sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves (if using), and salt. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Simmer slowly. Cook over low heat, uncovered, for about 1 hour, stirring often, until thickened and deep caramel in color.
  5. Jar and store. Spoon the hot apple butter into sterilized jars, leaving about 1/2 inch of headspace. Seal and refrigerate for up to one month.

The result is a velvety spread bursting with the cozy flavors of fall—perfect for gifting or savoring at home.
