“Daughter of the Stars” Opens in Front Royal: A Big Moment for Women Artists — and the Valley

Front Royal is stepping onto the regional art map in a major way. On Saturday, October 18, from 6–9 PM, the Melissa Ichiuji Studio Gallery (223 E. Main St.) will open “Daughter of the Stars,” the Shenandoah Valley’s home venue within the Women Artists of the DMV Survey Show—the largest curated exhibition of living women artists in the United States.

“Daughter of the Stars” (the English translation of Shenandoah) brings together more than 70 artists who live and work in the DMV/Shenandoah region. Their work fills the gallery with painting, sculpture, photography, textiles, installation, and more—bold and quiet voices side by side, each telling a story. The show was conceived by curator Lenny Campello and the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center as part of a multi-venue collaboration showcasing approximately 400 women artists across 17 venues in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Melissa Ichiuji Studio Gallery is the proud Shenandoah Valley site in this network.

This is more than an art opening. It’s a season-long celebration of creativity, learning, and community. The Northern Virginia Daily called it “a vibrant season of art, education, and community,” and the schedule proves it. From the October 18 opening through December 7, 2025, the gallery and local partners will host 24 special events designed to welcome everyone—newcomers to art, longtime supporters, families, and students.

Highlights include:

• Sunday Artist Talks with participating “Daughter of the Stars” artists
• A film series of eight documentary screenings about groundbreaking women, shown at Royal Cinemas
• Workshops and art classes for hands-on learning
• Author talks and community conversations
• Children’s story hours featuring books about extraordinary women in art, science, and more, in partnership with Samuels Public Library
• Bonus experiences like flower arranging and sound healing sessions

The programming is produced by a new local nonprofit, the Front Royal Project for the Arts, created to support artists and connect culture to daily life here in the Valley. The goal is simple: open doors, spark curiosity, and make art feel welcoming and useful to everyone.

Across 17 venues, hundreds of women are sharing their work at the same time, offering a snapshot of the creative energy shaping our region right now. With Front Royal serving as the Valley’s hub, local artists and audiences don’t have to drive to a big city to see themselves in a major show. They can walk downtown, step into the gallery, and find a community waiting for them.

The show also invites visitors to slow down and listen. Some artworks greet you with color and movement. Others whisper.
