VDOT Urges Early Travel Ahead of Major Winter Storm in Shenandoah Valley

Published

on

With a powerful winter storm forecast to blanket the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands in up to a foot of snow this weekend, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is urging residents to complete travel before snowfall begins Saturday afternoon.

Snow is expected to fall through early Monday, and road conditions will be hazardous throughout the storm and for several days afterward, especially on secondary roads and in subdivisions.

“We’re asking the public to stay off the roads during the storm,” VDOT officials said. “If you must travel, do so before conditions deteriorate.”

Plowing Priority: Interstates First, Neighborhoods Later

VDOT is pre-treating major highways today and Friday across its 11-county Staunton District. Once snow begins falling on Saturday, more than 1,100 plows and trucks will be deployed around the clock in rotating 12-hour shifts.

However, crews will focus first on interstates and primary roads, with secondary and neighborhood routes potentially taking several days to be cleared.

Heavy snowfall and reduced visibility will require plows to make multiple passes, delaying access to side roads. Additionally, extreme cold temperatures during and after the storm are expected to prevent melting and slow overall recovery.

Stay Informed and Avoid Travel

VDOT reminds drivers that they may not see bare pavement for days, especially on non-primary roads. Those who must travel should:

  • Check the 511 Virginia website or mobile app for real-time conditions
  • Call 511 before heading out
  • Be aware that conditions will vary across the state, with ice expected to affect southern Virginia more than snow

For assistance or to report roadway issues, contact the VDOT Customer Service Center at 800-367-7623 or visit the mobile-friendly website.

Counties Affected and Resources

The Staunton District includes:
Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany, and Bath counties.
