Targeted Exercises to Improve Your Putting

Published

on

With spring approaching, many golfers are starting to think about getting back on the course. Before the first round of the season, it’s a good idea to spend some time working on your putting—one of the most important parts of the game. A few simple exercises can help sharpen your precision and build confidence on the green.

Practice your stroke
Place two small boxes, such as golf ball boxes or tissue boxes, on the floor and space them just wide enough for the head of your putter to pass between them. Practice your putting stroke through this narrow “corridor,” focusing on keeping the putter moving straight without touching the boxes. This drill helps train a smooth, straight stroke that translates well to the putting green.

Master distance control
Lay a sheet of paper on a carpeted floor to serve as your target. Stand about eight feet away and putt the ball so it stops on the paper. Once you’re comfortable at that distance, gradually move farther back. This exercise helps you develop a better feel for distance control, which is essential when reading greens during a round.

Improve your grip
Place several golf balls on the ground, or on the floor if you’re practicing indoors. Take a series of putts using only one hand at a time. Alternate between your left and right hands to better understand how each contributes to the putting motion. This drill can improve both grip and overall control of the putter.

Practicing these simple drills regularly can help you start the season with greater confidence on the green. Before heading out for your first round, make sure your equipment is ready and consider visiting a local sporting goods store if you need to refresh your gear.
