Another close game for the Cardinals

Published

on

The Cardinals returned to Bing Crosby Stadium last night to face the Charlottesville TomSox after a disappointing 10-2 loss on the road at Strasburg Saturday night. In the loss to the Strasburg Express, the Cardinals managed to score only two runs on four hits, highlighted by a first inning home run by shortstop Patrick Baggett, his first of the season. Their second run didn’t come until the eighth inning and wasn’t enough to challenge the ten runs already on the board for the Express.

Sunday’s game with the Charlottesville TomSox remained a close affair all evening. Both teams remained scoreless until the fourth inning, when Cardinals’ second baseman, Dylan Menhennett, scored on Matthew Cooper’s single. The TomSox were not able to answer that run until the seventh inning, when they scored two runs and took the lead. The Cardinals appeared to threaten the lead in the bottom of the ninth, when shortstop Steve Grober smashed a ball down the left field line, but the hit was ruled foul, and the Cardinals were not able to manage another chance to tie up the game. The game ended with the score: TomSox 2, Cardinals 1.

Catcher Easton Waterman led the Cardinals with two doubles in three at bats. Starting pitcher Trey Fields threw five innings, allowed no runs on two hits, while striking out five batters and walking three.

The Cardinals have a rain makeup game tonight against the Covington Lumberjacks. First pitch is at 7:00 pm. The Cardinals have some exciting events happening this week. Friday, July 5th is Military Appreciation Night at Bing Crosby Stadium. All active duty military personnel and veterans will be admitted free. The Valley Baseball League All Star Game is Sunday, July 7th. That event will take place at Veterans Memorial Park on the campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg. Four Front Royal Cardinals were selected to the All-Star Team: Dylan Menhennett (2B), Carson Bell (3B), Tre Dabney (3B) and Shane Scott (P).
