Community Programs Helping Seniors Thrive and Age Gracefully

Local organizations are banding together under the “Senior Alliance Team” to provide comprehensive support for seniors in the region. The collaboration includes Seniors First, Blue Ridge Hospice, and Blue Ridge Independence at Home. Together, they aim to ensure seniors can age in place with dignity, comfort, and access to essential services.

Mary Parham, Program Manager of Seniors First, explained her organization’s broad reach, covering Winchester, Clarke, Frederick, Warren, Page, and Shenandoah counties. “Our mission is to help seniors age gracefully at home for as long as safely possible,” Parham said. Seniors First operates senior centers in each county, providing meals, social activities, and crucial programs like Medicare navigation and home care referrals. For those unable to access centers, Meals on Wheels and mail-order meal programs ensure no senior is left behind.

Holistic Care and End-of-Life Support

Patty Fadeley, Professional Relations Liaison for Blue Ridge Hospice, emphasized the organization’s focus on quality of life during end-of-life care. “We take care of folks with end-of-life needs, aiming to provide the best possible care in their final days,” she said. Hospice care often begins with palliative support to manage pain and symptoms long before a patient’s final weeks. Fadeley stressed the importance of early referrals: “We aim to connect with patients six months before their diagnosis is considered terminal, though many families reach out much later.”

Blue Ridge Hospice also stands out for its music therapy program. Certified therapists use music as a tool to soothe and comfort patients, reducing stress and managing symptoms in a natural, compassionate way.

A New Model of Care for Seniors

Ben Weber, Director of Access at Blue Ridge Independence at Home, introduced the area’s first PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) initiative. “We’re here to keep seniors in their homes for as long as possible,” Weber explained. PACE programs, available to seniors 55 and older who qualify for Medicare and Medicaid, offer a continuum of care. The local PACE center on Valor Drive in Winchester includes a medical clinic, dining facility, and therapy rooms for physical, occupational, and recreational therapy.

Weber explained how the program addresses loneliness and isolation, major challenges for many seniors. “We provide respite for caregivers, medical services, and even help with light housekeeping or home therapy. It’s a wraparound service tailored to individual needs,” he said.

The PACE model not only helps seniors avoid the costs of assisted living but also provides the community connection many crave.

Breaking Down Barriers

The Senior Alliance Team stresses the importance of early planning and awareness. Parham encouraged families to reach out before a crisis hits: “When families call us ahead of time, we can lay out all their options and help them prepare.”

The organizations also highlighted the difficulties seniors face in navigating the flood of misleading advertisements for services like Medicare Advantage plans. “Seniors First’s SHIP program offers unbiased guidance to help individuals make informed decisions,” Parham said.

Collaborative Care

By working together, the Senior Alliance Team ensures no senior falls through the cracks. “This collaboration adds to the success of caring for seniors appropriately,” Fadeley said. The partnership allows the organizations to refer individuals to the right resources, ensuring that every senior has access to the support they need.

For those who want to learn more, Seniors First and Blue Ridge Independence at Home offer open invitations for tours. “Education is key,” Weber said. “Come see our programs firsthand and discover how we’re working to support the seniors in our community.”

With the baby boomer generation aging, the Senior Alliance Team’s work has never been more critical. Their efforts are ensuring that seniors in the region can live their golden years with dignity, support, and a strong community behind them.
