A Call for Kindness, Respect, and Community

Published

on

I don’t care what anyone says… the LGBTQ+ community in Warren County is one of the most amazing groups of people I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.

The Pride Festival this past weekend was the third well-managed event they’ve hosted, and once again, they knocked it out of the park.

The performers – and yes, they are performers – were, dare I say it… fabulous! They were talented, creative, entertaining, and clearly put countless hours into what they do. Their supporters were every bit as welcoming, kind, and generous with their time.

I can’t imagine someone hating, bullying, or attacking one of my children simply for being themselves. I also can’t imagine anyone who professes to follow Christ doing those things to another human being.

Then again… maybe I can.

What has always puzzled me is the contradiction. Some of the loudest voices quoting Scripture about righteousness somehow skip over the repeated messages about loving your neighbor, showing mercy, and treating others with compassion. Meanwhile, the very people they’re condemning are often the ones creating spaces where everyone is welcomed, accepted, and encouraged to be themselves.

You don’t have to agree with every choice another person makes to treat them with dignity. Kindness doesn’t require agreement. Respect isn’t surrender. And compassion isn’t a political position – it’s a human one.

Whether you’re celebrating Pride, attending a church picnic, or simply shopping downtown, every person deserves to feel safe in their own community.

I think Warren County is at its best when we remember that.
