DMV, DRIVE SMART Virginia, and College Athletics Team Up for Sober Driving Campaign

With college basketball season about to electrify sports fans across the state, a major initiative is underway to ensure game days are both fun and safe. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and DRIVE SMART Virginia are partnering with James Madison University (JMU) and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) athletics to promote responsible celebrations with their campaign, What’s Your Game Plan: Choose a Sober Driver and Buckle Up.

Campaign Kicks Off with a Vital Message

The campaign, rolling out just in time for basketball season, encourages fans to plan ahead for a sober ride home after games. “Planning ahead for a night out is a must,” stressed DMV Commissioner Gerald Lackey, who serves as the Governor’s Highway Safety Representative. He emphasized the importance of this partnership with JMU and VCU and expressed gratitude for their commitment to spreading the life-saving message.

“College sports bring out some of the best energy and excitement,” added Kristin Pettway, Executive Director of DRIVE SMART Virginia. “But after the final whistle, having a plan for a safe ride home ensures the fun continues without the risk.”

Stats Show the Urgency

The need for such outreach is backed by sobering statistics: in Virginia alone, there were 6,979 alcohol-related crashes last year, resulting in 293 deaths. As Pettway points out, these numbers highlight a simple but crucial truth: planning a safe ride home isn’t just a good idea; it’s a necessity.

A Presence on Campus and in the Community

JMU and VCU fans can expect reminders throughout the season about making responsible choices. This year marks the campaign’s first appearance at JMU and a return to VCU, with both universities fully committed to raising awareness among their sports-loving communities. Local Learfield teams, JMU Sports Properties, and VCU Sports Properties play a key role in the campaign’s campus presence.

“We are proud to amplify such a vital message to our respective fan bases,” said Erik Lowery, VCU Sports Properties General Manager. He emphasized the importance of game day traditions and the necessity of enjoying them safely.

Making Safe Celebrations a Priority

Whether tailgating or cheering for a game-winning shot, fans are reminded to prepare their transportation plan before the festivities start. That means choosing a sober driver, using ride-sharing services, or finding other ways to ensure everyone gets home safely.

Ultimately, the campaign seeks to transform the excitement of basketball season into an opportunity for proactive decision-making. A simple plan can prevent tragedy, ensuring the celebration doesn’t take a dangerous turn.

The Road Ahead

As the basketball season heats up, DMV, DRIVE SMART Virginia, and these universities hope fans will embrace this crucial message. After all, a win on the court is even sweeter when fans celebrate responsibly. The What’s Your Game Plan initiative promises to keep this message front and center, driving home the importance of sober driving all season long.
