German World Cup Fan Finds an Unexpected Favorite in American Roadside Culture

Published

on

A trip across North America to follow Germany in the FIFA World Cup turned into something much bigger for one young German fan, who became a social media favorite by reacting with pure excitement to some of the most ordinary parts of American life.

Known online as “Freddy the German,” the traveler set out to follow Germany’s national team through the United States and Canada. Along the way, he began posting about everything from soccer matches to gas stations, fast food, giant stores, and late-night diners.

Before long, the stops between games became just as entertaining to followers as the World Cup itself.

According to Newsweek, Freddy’s posts drew millions of views as people followed his six-week road trip. The Washington Examiner reported that his following on X, formerly Twitter, climbed past 350,000 in a matter of days.

A visit to Buc-ee’s became one of the highlights.

For many Americans, the Texas-born travel center chain is already known for its enormous stores, long rows of fuel pumps, barbecue, snacks, merchandise, and smiling beaver mascot. To Freddy, it seemed more like a tourist attraction.

His amazement at Buc-ee’s quickly became part of the fun for American followers who were used to seeing the chain as simply a place to stop during a road trip.

Walmart received a similar reaction. So did Taco Bell.

Then came Waffle House.

A visit to the famously around-the-clock restaurant at about 1 a.m. gave Freddy another distinctly American experience, and his enthusiastic reaction helped fuel his growing internet following.

What appeared to connect with people was not simply that a foreign visitor liked American food or stores. It was the sense that Freddy found something interesting in places many residents barely notice.

A gas station became an adventure.

A restaurant after midnight became an event.

A trip through Walmart became part of the story.

His enthusiasm offered Americans a chance to see familiar parts of their own culture through the eyes of someone experiencing them for the first time.

The reason for the trip was the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which brought soccer supporters from around the world to North America during June and July.

This year’s tournament was the first World Cup to be held across three host countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Matches were held across 16 host cities as national teams competed in the world’s largest international soccer tournament.

For supporters like Freddy, following a team meant long trips between cities and plenty of time on North American highways.

That is where much of his unexpected adventure unfolded.

Instead of posting only scores, stadium photos, and game analysis, Freddy shared his reactions to everyday experiences. Those posts began spreading far beyond soccer audiences.

Reporters eventually described him as something like the internet’s favorite exchange student.

His growing popularity also brought some unusual opportunities. During his travels, a retired professional football player hosted him in Houston, adding another unexpected chapter to a trip that had already become far more than a soccer tour.

Freddy was not the only international visitor fascinated by things Americans consider routine.

Other European travelers shared similar discoveries during their World Cup visits. One Swedish visitor reportedly became fascinated with ranch dressing. Others found themselves trying to understand American soda fountains capable of producing seemingly endless drink combinations.

Those reactions became their own kind of cultural exchange.

For international visitors, the World Cup offered a chance to experience the scale and variety of North America beyond the stadiums. For Americans following their journeys online, the visitors offered a reminder that everyday things can look very different to someone seeing them for the first time.

That may explain why Freddy’s posts connected so strongly.

He did not appear to be searching for hidden landmarks or carefully planned cultural experiences. Much of the entertainment came from spontaneous discoveries during an ordinary road trip.

Buc-ee’s happened to be one of them.

Waffle House happened to be another.

And while millions of fans came to North America this summer for soccer, one German visitor discovered that some of the most memorable parts of a trip can happen far from the field.

For Freddy, the World Cup may have provided the reason to come.

American roadside culture gave him something else to cheer about.
