Kids Become Nature Sleuths at “Spring Habitat Detectives” Walk

Published

on

Young nature lovers and their families can step into the role of forest detectives during “Spring Habitat Detectives”, a special guided walk at Sky Meadows State Park on Saturday, April 19, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Led by two volunteers from the Virginia Master Naturalist Shenandoah Chapter, this event is the first in a new seasonal series designed specifically for children.

Recommended for kids ages 7 to 11, the walk introduces participants to the forest community’s hidden relationships, using all five senses to uncover how plants, animals, insects, fungi, and other organisms survive and work together in spring. With a gentle pace and interactive teaching, this short 0.3-mile hike is full of hands-on learning and outdoor fun.

The journey begins at the Sensory Explorers’ Trail, located in the park’s Picnic Area, and lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours. The trail is designed to be accessible and engaging for all ages and abilities, with features that support visitors who are blind or visually impaired.

Though registration is not required, it is highly encouraged to ensure a spot and help organizers prepare the best possible experience. Families can sign up online at Eventbrite.

The Spring Habitat Detectives program is part of a growing effort by local Master Naturalists and Sky Meadows staff to introduce young people to seasonal changes in local ecosystems, while also promoting sensory learning and outdoor exploration. Each seasonal walk in the series will build on the last, helping children develop a stronger understanding of nature and their connection to it.

Admission to the event is free, though the park’s standard $10 parking fee applies. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and be dressed for the weather. Parents and guardians are required to accompany children on the walk.

Sky Meadows State Park is located at 11012 Edmonds Lane in Delaplane, Virginia. To learn more about this and other family-friendly programs, visit the park’s website at www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/sky-meadows, call 540-592-3556, or email SkyMeadows@dcr.virginia.gov.

The Sensory Explorers’ Trail is also open for self-guided visits daily and includes a downloadable audio tour that enhances the experience for individuals with visual impairments.
