Melissa Ichiuji Studio Gallery Launches “Bodies: Water, Land, Flesh, Evidence”
The Melissa Ichiuji Studio Gallery in Front Royal is proud to host Bodies: Water, Land, Flesh, Evidence, an evocative group exhibition that opened on November 2 and runs until December 21, 2024. Located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, the gallery is set to become a hub of artistic exploration this fall, featuring work from 23 diverse artists who explore the themes of physicality, nature, and existence.
The exhibition invites visitors to consider the concept of “bodies” in all its forms: from our human bodies to the natural bodies of water and land that shape our world and even the abstract evidence that ties us to our environment. With pieces spanning painting, sculpture, and performance art, Bodies presents a multi-sensory journey that challenges us to reflect on our connection to the world around us.

Melissa Ichiuji, a celebrated artist and the gallery’s founder, has curated a show that blends local and regional talent with artists from across the country. Featured artists include

The exhibition is a rich tapestry of painting, sculpture, and performance, each examining our relationship with our physical selves, the landscapes we inhabit, and the natural forces we are intertwined with. Participating artists include: Alexandra Arata, Robert Ballard, Megan Caldwell, Anthony Cervino, Abbie Chessler, Gary Colson, Sam Grantham, Janis Goodman, Thomas Dade, Teresa Jarzynski, Craig McPherson, Winslow McCagg, Tom Mullany, David Page, Keith Patterson, Lilla Ohrstrom, Amie Oliver, Ron Paras, Olga Shushkova-Hunyadi, Thomas Spande, Chris Stephens, Whitney Waller, Patricia Underwood.
Each brings a unique perspective to the overarching theme, crafting pieces that explore everything from the Shenandoah Valley’s natural beauty to the intricacies of human form and emotion.
Craig McPherson, a master of the rare mezzotint technique, will display six works and offer a lecture in December, drawing on his experiences from New York to Virginia. McPherson’s storied career includes creating monumental murals for American Express’s headquarters, and his work has been collected by leading museums worldwide.
Another exhibiting artist, Keith Patterson, draws inspiration from the natural world, particularly his personal garden, modeled after Monet’s Giverny. “Being part of this exhibition is an honor,” said Patterson. His paintings embody a deep reverence for the landscape, capturing the essence of nature through a vibrant, impressionistic lens.
The exhibition also includes Olga Shushkova-Hunyadi, a recent transplant to Warrenton, Virginia, from Russia. Shushkova-Hunyadi’s paintings blend warm cityscapes with serene small-town life, and she will give live painting demonstrations in the gallery, offering visitors an intimate look at her creative process.
Beyond the Exhibition: Events and Experiences
Bodies: Water, Land, Flesh, Evidence features a robust lineup of events, including artist talks, live demonstrations, and performances. David Page, known for his powerful performance art, will showcase a durational piece that explores themes of agency and restraint. “Expect something deeply thought-provoking,” teased Page, who has roots in Cape Town and brings an international flair to the gallery.
Melissa Ichiuji, who herself has a reputation for boundary-pushing art, emphasized the gallery’s mission to be a cultural and creative gathering place. “We want this to be a space where art comes alive, where the community feels welcome to explore and engage with the works,” she said.
The opening reception on November 2 gave attendees the opportunity to meet many featured artists and explore the pieces in a lively, welcoming environment. The exhibition and its associated events are set to create a space where visitors can immerse themselves in art that speaks to both personal and collective experiences.
