VDOT Gears Up for Winter, Urges Drivers to Be Prepared

Published

As the vibrant hues of autumn fade and leaves drift to the ground, winter’s icy breath is not far behind. In Virginia, that means snowy and icy roads are a real possibility. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has been gearing up for months to tackle the challenges of snow and ice, ensuring state-maintained roads stay as clear and safe as possible. However, VDOT also reminds residents that they have a key role to play in making this season safe.

Ready for Snowfall

VDOT Chief of Maintenance and Operations Kevin Gregg emphasizes that early planning is critical. “Since the end of last winter, VDOT has been planning and preparing its crews for when the first snowflakes fall so that we can maintain the roadways and keep travelers safe and on the move,” Gregg said.

This year, VDOT’s preparation includes conducting training exercises and equipment tests throughout October. Snowplow drivers participated in these dry-run exercises, practicing their routes and identifying potential obstacles. This helps ensure that they are ready to work efficiently when snow actually falls.

The scale of VDOT’s winter operations is enormous. The department is responsible for clearing nearly 60,000 miles of state-maintained roads. Its fleet includes thousands of snow-removal equipment and storage facilities with road treatment materials. The goal? To be fully prepared whenever winter weather strikes.

Staying Safe Together

VDOT stresses that residents also have a part to play. Drivers should prepare their vehicles and adjust their travel plans when bad weather is expected. Making sure cars are in good condition is crucial. Checking tires, brakes, antifreeze, and de-icing windshield washer fluid can make a big difference in avoiding accidents.

“It’s not just VDOT that should be preparing,” Gregg reminded the public. “Check your tires, wiper blades, and antifreeze, and make sure you’re ready for inclement winter weather.”

Plan and Prepare for Every Trip

VDOT offers several essential safety tips for winter driving. First, when severe weather is forecasted, staying off the roads is often the safest option. If drivers avoid traveling during heavy snow or ice storms, they reduce the risk of crashes and make it easier for emergency crews and snowplow drivers to do their jobs.

It’s important to have an emergency kit in the car before hitting the road. Essential items include an ice scraper, jumper cables, a blanket, phone chargers, a flashlight, and a first-aid kit. Even if conditions don’t seem bad when leaving, snow and ice can quickly make driving dangerous.

Check Road Conditions Before Traveling

VDOT encourages all drivers to stay informed and plan. Motorists can make smarter, safer decisions by checking weather forecasts and monitoring traffic reports. Virginians can use the free 511 app or visit 511virginia.org for real-time updates. These resources provide critical information about road conditions, closures, and ongoing snow removal efforts.

As winter approaches, VDOT is committed to keeping roads safe, but it counts on drivers to do their part. With preparation and caution, everyone can travel more safely through whatever winter brings.
