The Dishwasher Wars: Who Is Right?

Published

on

For a machine that’s supposed to save time and energy, the dishwasher sure seems to create plenty of arguments—especially about how to load it.

According to appliance maker Bosch, more than 40 percent of Americans admit they fight over dishwasher loading. Maybe that’s because the task happens in plain sight, right in the kitchen, where everyone feels entitled to weigh in.

And make no mistake: people have strong opinions about where the forks, plates, and mugs belong.

Appliance giant General Electric says there are three main personalities when it comes to dishwasher loading:

  • “Protectors” load utensils with the handles up so no one touches the eating end when unloading.
  • “Organizers” move fast, tossing in dishes and pulling them out with speed as the only priority.
  • “Curators” arrange with precision, grouping tall plates with tall plates, even if the dishwasher’s design doesn’t require it.

The debate is further complicated by today’s energy-efficient dishwashers, which use less water. That’s good for the environment, but it raises the question: how clean do dishes need to be before going in?

Soap and appliance manufacturers advise against pre-rinsing, saying modern machines and detergents are designed to handle scraps. But old habits die hard, and plenty of people still insist on rinsing every dish before loading it.

Even household experts weigh in. Martha Stewart cautions against putting certain items in the dishwasher at all. Her “do not load” list includes knives, pewter, wood, china, crystal, cast iron, nonstick pans, and gold-plated flatware. She also warns against mixing silver or silver-plate utensils with stainless steel, since the metals can react and damage each other.

So is there a best way to load the dishwasher? Even artificial intelligence won’t take sides. Asked about the debate, AI bot Grok declined to crown a winner, instead offering a diplomatic answer: “There is no actual best way. Just try to space things out.”

In other words, maybe the real answer isn’t about how to load—it’s about learning to unload the arguments.
