The Muscles That Keep You Walking Aren’t Only in Your Legs

Published

on

Ask most people which muscles keep them walking, and they will probably point to their thighs. But the muscles that matter most are spread across the body, from the calves and hips to the back and core.

The calf muscles are especially important. They provide much of the push-off that moves the body forward with each step. As people age and calf strength declines, walking often changes too. Steps may shorten, and the overall pace may slow.

According to the Merck Manual, loss of calf power is one of the common changes seen in older adults.

As the calves do less of the work, the body relies more on the hips. The gluteal muscles and hip flexors help keep the legs moving through each step, and older adults tend to depend on them more than younger walkers do.

That makes hip strength increasingly important with age.

Walking also depends on muscles that many people do not think of as “walking muscles” at all.

The back extensors and core muscles help keep the upper body upright. When those muscles weaken, posture can shift forward. That changes the body’s center of gravity and can shorten the stride, making walking less steady and more of a shuffle.

Research published in the journal Heliyon has found that back-extensor strength can be a strong indicator of overall physical function in older adults, sometimes even more useful than the strength of muscles across the front of the trunk.

But strength alone is not the whole answer.

Studies suggest that stronger calf muscles do not automatically translate into a stronger push-off during walking. That is why physical therapists often combine strengthening exercises with actual walking practice.

Patients may be coached to stand taller, take fuller steps, and push off more firmly with each stride.

The lesson is simple: walking well depends on more than the legs.

Strong calves help propel the body forward. Strong hips keep the stride moving. A strong back and core help maintain balance and posture.

Together, those muscles help people walk with greater stability, confidence, and independence as they age.
