Virginia-Made Marine Mattress Nominated for 2026 Manufacturing Cup

A Virginia-made mattress designed to fit the unusual curves and tight spaces aboard boats and yachts is in the running to be named one of the Commonwealth’s coolest products.

The Winndom Marine Mattress, manufactured by family-owned Winndom Mattress in Hopewell, has been nominated in the Furniture & Fixtures category of the 2026 Virginia Manufacturing Cup.

The annual competition, hosted by the Virginia Manufacturers Association and sponsored by ERA Group, highlights products manufactured across Virginia and the companies and workers behind them. Public voting runs from Sept. 21 through Oct. 9.

For Winndom, the nomination recognizes a product that requires a different approach from building a traditional rectangular mattress.

“With marine mattresses, the details really matter,” Winndom Mattress President Justin Faison said. “Every berth has its own shape, and we take great care to make sure each mattress is built to fit that space exactly.”

The company builds marine mattresses for individual boat and yacht berths, taking into account measurements, curves and contours that can vary widely from vessel to vessel.

Winndom has worked with Outer Banks boat builders including Paul Mann Custom Boats, Scarborough Boatworks, Ritchie Howell Carolina Custom Yachts and Spencer Yachts. The company has also made mattresses for sailboat owners throughout the Chesapeake Bay region.

“We take the time to get the measurements, curves, and contours right so the finished mattress fits the berth as precisely as possible,” Faison said. “We’re honored to have that Virginia-made craftsmanship recognized by the Manufacturing Cup.”

Winndom’s marine mattresses can also be customized for comfort. Optional hinged sections can be incorporated into a mattress so boat owners can continue to reach storage areas beneath a berth.

The Virginia Manufacturing Cup is designed to highlight the variety of products made in the Commonwealth, from familiar consumer goods to specialized products many Virginians may not realize are manufactured in their own state.

“The Virginia Manufacturing Cup is an opportunity to celebrate the products, technologies, and innovations that are strengthening Virginia’s position as a manufacturing leader,” said Brett Vassey, president and CEO of the Virginia Manufacturers Association.

“Each nominee represents the talent, creativity, and impact of Virginia manufacturers, and we are proud to showcase their contributions to our Commonwealth,” Vassey said.

The competition includes a public voting component. Voting is open online at vamfgcup.com through Oct. 9, and participants may cast up to five votes per day.

Winners will be announced during the Virginia Manufacturing Gala on Nov. 6, when manufacturing leaders from around the state are scheduled to gather to recognize Virginia-made products and companies.

While Winndom Mattress is based in Hopewell, the company also has a connection to the Northern Shenandoah Valley. It sells standard-size mattresses through select Virginia furniture stores, including Patton’s Furniture in Winchester.

The family business traces its roots to 1988, when Winn Butterworth founded Custom Comfort by Winn, focusing on mattress manufacturing and customer service.

Today, Butterworth’s daughter, Carman Faison, and son-in-law, Justin Faison, operate the business. Winndom mattresses are handcrafted in Hopewell using American materials, the company says.

The manufacturer makes traditional residential mattresses as well as mattresses for spaces where standard sizes and shapes won’t work.

Those custom applications include boats and yachts, recreational vehicles, antique beds and other nonstandard sleeping spaces.

The marine mattress is one example of that custom work, with each mattress shaped around the dimensions of an individual berth rather than requiring a boat owner to adapt the space to a standard mattress.

For this year’s Manufacturing Cup, that specialized approach has put Hopewell’s work before voters across Virginia.
