We’re Sitting at the Front Door… But Are We Inviting Anyone In?

Published

on

Spend a few minutes in Front Royal on almost any weekend, and you’ll see something interesting.

Cars with license plates from Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Florida, and beyond make their way through town. Many of those visitors are headed to Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, or one of the many outdoor adventures that make our region so special.

Some stop.

Many don’t.

That got me thinking.

We often talk about attracting more visitors, but perhaps the better question is this: Are we giving people enough reasons to stay?

Front Royal occupies a remarkable position. We’re the northern gateway to one of America’s most visited national parks. Millions of people travel through this region each year in search of beautiful scenery, outdoor adventure, small-town charm, and memorable experiences.

The visitors are already coming.

The opportunity isn’t necessarily convincing them to drive here—many already are. The opportunity is creating a destination that encourages them to spend another hour, another afternoon, or maybe even another night.

Because destinations aren’t built by accident.

They’re built intentionally.

Think back to one of your favorite trips. Chances are, you don’t remember where you parked. You probably don’t remember the visitor brochure you picked up or the road signs you followed.

You remember the coffee shop where you started your morning.

The little bookstore you wandered into without planning.

The local shop where someone took the time to tell you a story.

The restaurant you now recommend to friends.

The overlook where you watched the sunset.

The experience.

Those moments are what transform a place from somewhere people pass through into somewhere they want to return.

Tourism isn’t just about hotels or attractions. It’s about the entire community working together to create an experience that people can’t find anywhere else.

It’s the local artist selling their work.

The family-owned restaurant serves a meal worth remembering.

The downtown shop owner greets visitors with a smile.

The festival that brings neighbors and newcomers together.

The trail recommendation that becomes someone’s favorite memory of the trip.

None of these things, by themselves, defines a destination.

Together, they do.

One of the things I’ve learned through owning a small business downtown is that visitors are often looking for something authentic. They don’t want a copy of another town. They want to discover what makes this place unique.

Fortunately, Front Royal has no shortage of things that make it special.

We’re surrounded by mountains, rivers, history, and some of the most beautiful scenery on the East Coast. We have passionate business owners, talented artists, dedicated volunteers, and a community that genuinely cares about where it lives.

Those are incredible assets.

The challenge—and the opportunity—is weaving those individual strengths into an experience that visitors remember long after they’ve returned home.

That’s a conversation worth having because tourism isn’t simply about attracting more people. It’s about creating opportunities for local businesses, supporting jobs, strengthening our downtown, and building a community that residents are proud to call home.

As I continue writing this column, we’ll explore ideas, look at data, highlight successes, and ask questions about where our community is headed. My hope isn’t to tell anyone what to think, but to encourage thoughtful conversations about what’s possible.

Yes, we should continue telling the world about Front Royal and Warren County. We should invite more people to discover everything this area has to offer.

But just as importantly, we should keep asking ourselves one simple question:

What kind of experience are those visitors taking home with them?

Because that’s what turns first-time visitors into lifelong ambassadors.
