Blue Ridge Wildlife Center Patient of the Week: Eastern Gray Squirrel

And just like that, the start of Baby Season 2024 is here!

The first baby squirrel of the year signals the start of a much anticipated season for Virginia wildlife rehabbers—Baby Season.

This infant squirrel was admitted as a suspected cat attack and was suffering from multiple puncture wounds into the chest, bruising, and dehydration.

Given her otherwise good body condition and attitude, she received fluids, antibiotics, and pain medications.

Although prognosis is guarded, the baby is resting comfortably in a warm incubator and slowly being transitioned to a species-appropriate formula.

As baby season marches on, remember that any animal found with wounds, observed in ANY domestic animal’s mouth (even if no obvious wounds), covered in insects, cold, or otherwise acting abnormally—they need professional care ASAP!

Most importantly, please keep your non-native pets indoors, on a leash, or in a contained space like a catio. Not only does this prevent unnecessary suffering to wildlife and keep pets safe, but it also helps babies stay with their parents… the best possible situation!

We have received many calls about baby squirrels already, but unlike this patient, most have not needed to come in for care.

Though we provide the highest quality of care possible, we are not mother squirrels and we will never have the success rate their mother could achieve. We’re always happy to be that second option for animals if they truly need it, but please be patient with us when you call and we inquire for more information—we just want to do what’s best for them.

If you find a baby squirrel, please follow our flowchart to determine what to do!
