Learn to Spot Scams: Free Workshop Set for June 2

Published

on

Local seniors will soon have a chance to learn how to protect themselves from growing online threats as Virginia TRIAD hosts a special workshop focused on artificial intelligence and email fraud.

The event, titled “Artificial Intelligence & Email Fraud Awareness for Seniors,” is set for June 2, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Front Royal Fire & Rescue Station on North Commerce Avenue.

Organizers say the program is designed to help older adults better understand modern scams, especially those that use new technologies such as artificial intelligence. As online fraud becomes more advanced, officials say education is one of the best tools to stay safe.

The workshop will feature Shawn Smith, State Director of the Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol, as the guest speaker. Smith is expected to share real-world examples and practical tips for recognizing and avoiding scams targeting seniors.

Topics will include common email fraud tactics, warning signs of scams, and how artificial intelligence is being used to trick victims. Attendees will also learn steps they can take to protect personal information and respond if they believe they have been targeted.

The event is hosted by Virginia TRIAD, a group focused on reducing crime against older adults. Several local agencies are also supporting the program, including the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Front Royal Police Department, Warren County Fire & Rescue, and the Office of the Attorney General.

Organizers say the goal is to give seniors the knowledge and confidence to navigate today’s digital world safely.

Space for the event is limited, and advance registration is required. Those interested must RSVP by May 20, 2026, by contacting Misty Alger at 540-635-8652.

Lunch will be provided for attendees, courtesy of TGI Fridays.

With scams continuing to evolve, officials say events like this play an important role in keeping the community informed and protected.
