TOWN NOTICE: Planting Season – Utilities

Published

on

Properly placed and maintained trees and shrubs are a valuable resource for both homes and communities. However, without careful planning and proper plant selection prior to planting, trees and shrubs can cause a nuisance and become a dangerous and costly problem for both homeowners and the Town of Front Royal’s Energy Services Department.

When planted too closely to electric meters, transformers and other utilities, they can create access problems for utility workers who need to read or service equipment. By carefully planning and using proper plant selection, you can reduce the risks and costs associated with these problems.

We ask that residents who will be planting near electric transformers or other electrical equipment make sure to comply with the following clearance guidelines: maintain a three-foot clearance along the sides and back and a six-foot clearance along the front of equipment once plants reach maturity, allow adequate space for future growth, avoid planting shrubs or setting posts directly over cables and make sure to call “Miss Utility” at 811 before digging.

Thank you for your help in keeping our community safe and beautiful.

If you would like more information about planting guidelines, please feel free to contact the Energy Services Department at (540) 635-3027
