Black History Program at Belle Grove Plantation

The Belle Grove Plantation

Belle Grove Plantation was the home of Isaac Hite, Jr. and his first wife Nelly Madison Hite (sister of President James Madison) and second wife Ann Tunstall Maury Hite.  Isaac Hite, Jr. owned and lived on the property from 1783 until his death in 1836 and his family continued to live here until the 1850s before selling it in 1860.  Family records indicate that Isaac Hite, Jr. owned 276 enslaved individuals. The success of the agriculture and manufacturing on the Plantation would not have been possible without their labor. The staff and board of directors of Belle Grove Plantation are committed to researching the lives of these enslaved people so that we may preserve and present their history as well as the history of the Hite family.

Belle Grove Plantation is located off Route 11 at 336 Belle Grove Road just south of Middletown, Virginia 22645 and is conveniently located to I-81 (use exit 302) and I-66.  Belle Grove Plantation is a non-profit historic house museum that is a National Trust for Historic Preservation site and a partner in Cedar Creek Belle Grove National Historical Park.

Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park Ranger Shannon Moeck will lead a 30-minute program, Kneading in Silence: A Glimpse Into The Life of Judah the Enslaved Cook in the Belle Grove Winter Kitchen. Purchased by the Hites in 1794, Judah remained their cook until her death in 1836.


Reverend Bessie Taylor Jett is the Pastor of the Church Without Walls Ministry, Huntly, VA. This ministry is worship to sick and shut-in members located in the Shenandoah Valley, the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia.  She is the former pastor of the Esbie Baptist Church, Strasburg, VA.  She earned her Masters of Divinity degree from the School of Theology, Virginia Union University in Richmond, VA. She has served in leadership positions on the National, State and local areas.  She is the current Assistant Secretary of the Warren-Page Branch of the NAACP.  She has published a book, Worship Aids for the Church, a collection of invocations, offertory sentences, etc.
