DWR Urges Sober Boating, Life Jackets for Independence Day Weekend
The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources is reminding boaters to stay sober and wear life jackets during the Independence Day holiday weekend.
The warning comes as part of Operation Dry Water, a national boating safety effort focused on education and enforcement against boating under the influence.
“So far this year, five people have lost their lives, and six people have been injured in boating-related incidents on Virginia waters,” DWR Major Ryan Shuler said. “Help us ensure the waterways are safe this holiday weekend and all summer long by always designating a sober operator, wearing your lifejacket, and being aware of your surroundings at all times.”
During last year’s Operation Dry Water weekend, DWR Conservation Police Officers arrested 10 people for boating under the influence, issued 255 citations for other boating violations, and gave 160 verbal warnings. Officers also contacted more than 3,500 boaters with safety guidance.
Officials said alcohol can impair judgment, balance, vision, and reaction time, while sun, wind, noise, vibration, and motion can make those effects worse.
Boaters should carry U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets in good condition for every person on board, including children. DWR also encourages boaters to check the weather, tell someone where they are going and when they expect to return, and inspect safety gear before leaving.
