Remembering their sacrifices – Congressman Bob Goodlatte
For generations, brave men and women have stood in defense of our freedoms as Americans. They have served on battlefields across the globe and here at home, and because of them the liberties upon which our nation was founded have been preserved for well over 200 years.
As we observe Memorial Day, let us not forget the true meaning of this day. It’s not parades, BBQs, beaches, or pools. Memorial Day is about honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. They gave the last full measure of devotion, and we are forever grateful for the sacrifices of these heroes.
To those who serve in the military today and to our veterans who have served over the years, thank you. I also want to recognize military families. While these folks may not be on the front lines, they sacrifice as well. My prayers are especially with the Gold Star families on this somber day – they know all too well the true reason for Memorial Day and the pain of losing a loved one.
America is the land of the free because it is the home of the brave. I hope you will take the time to remember the fallen heroes who have given their lives for our country. May God bless the United States of America.
Sincerely,

JFK at 100: Memorial Day Weekend is also President John F. Kennedy’s Centennial weekend. He was born 100 years ago on Monday. President Kennedy was a veteran himself and was assassinated while serving as the 35th President of the United States. We remember President Kennedy and his service.

FLAGS-IN: Each year, soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) honor the nation’s fallen heroes ahead of Memorial Day weekend as part of a Flags-In tradition at Arlington National Cemetery.
