Legislative Update
Update from Delegate Chris Collins
This is a beautiful time of the year in the Shenandoah Valley, and I hope you have an opportunity to get outdoors to enjoy the various community events and natural beauty of our region.
Monday, May 29, 2017 is Memorial Day. As you spend time with your family and friends, please take a moment to reflect upon the sacrifice that the men and women in uniform have made to protect our freedom. There are several Memorial Day ceremonies in the 29th District, and you can learn more about these events in the Upcoming Events section of the newsletter.
Graduation season is upon us. I would like to congratulate all of our college and high school students who have successfully achieved this important milestone. I wish you all the best as you take the next step in your lives.
June Election Primary Day is quickly approaching. Join me on June 13 between 6 am-7 pm to cast a vote for your party nominees for Governor and Lieutenant Governor. Both parties only had one candidate for Attorney General, thus each have become their party’s nominee by default.
On Primary Day, you can vote at your usual polling place. Please note that you can only vote in one party’s primary – not both. When going to the polls, you will be required to show a valid photo ID.
I encourage you to contact my district office anytime you have a state government need. My staff and I are here to help. It is an honor to serve as your Delegate and I look forward to seeing you around the District.
During the past year, Ben Gustafson has been working with us in our legislative office. Starting as a mentorship by way of his Gifted Independent Study class, Ben’s tenure on our team continued throughout his fall and spring semesters; in addition, he worked for Delegate Collins as a Legislative Aide during the 2017 General Assembly Session. Ben has tackled a wide variety of tasks while working for us. For example, Ben helped coordinate our first art competition (titled “Views of the Valley”) for local students; we hope this becomes an annual event that expands and flourishes. Furthermore, he has been an incredible boon in organizing fundraisers, developing newsletters, and communicating with constituents.
Graduating at the end of the month, Ben is currently a senior at Sherando High School. In August, he will be attending the University of Virginia and plans to major in finance and/or management; ultimately, he plans to attend law school. When he isn’t working in our office or studying, Ben participates in numerous extracurricular activities, such as the debate team, or spends time with friends.
