Restoring Democracy and Opportunity

Published

on

Many who proclaim that Democrats are surrendering to socialism or fault their pessimism about the state of the union are the same folks who happily disregard the autocratic nature of this presidency. They disregard the crony capitalism of investments in businesses that he directly influences. The president acquired two billion dollars during the first year of his return to the presidency. Much of that came from a Trump family cryptocurrency firm started shortly before taking office. Half of the financing for Trump’s firm came from an Abu Dhabi royal. Two months after the money transfer, the Trump administration granted access to 500,000 of the US’s most advanced AI chips. The Biden administration rejected a deal with the royal because of the emirate’s ties to China. No Republican will speak out.

Indeed, the Republican Party has made enriching corporations and the wealthy its core agenda, with racism, censorship, and corruption its standard operating procedure. Their singular legislative accomplishment was the passage of a swollen budget bill (strictly with Republican votes) that awarded tax breaks to those who need no relief and cut back on assistance for healthcare for millions for whom doctor visits are a luxury. Trump’s economic plans, including tariffs and trade wars, cutting back on scientific research, and stifling dissent, have increased inflation and stifled economic vitality.

This president started a war of choice with predictably dire consequences and a stalemate, causing global turmoil and economic hardship. In another war, this president sided with Russia, completely missing the fact that Ukrainian innovation was about to change the face of modern warfare. This president has constructed his own police force, poorly trained and answerable only to him. They have already executed two Americans who were exercising their right to assemble, a bedrock American right.

The Republican candidacy of 2024 featured economic concerns and promises to address them. Instead, voters got invasions of foreign countries and American cities, higher inflation, and a stalling economic outlook. Republican policies, such as refusing to raise minimum wages, denying healthcare, and granting favors to businesses as a result of donations, discourage and frustrate voters. Republicans capitalize on this frustration by inflating and inflaming cultural issues to keep voters’ minds off of the injustices the Republican Party peddles. For insurance against their failed policies, they intend to suppress voters’ access.

The Republican Party is responsible for the chaotic, contradictory, and offensive nature of the current state of governance. For 50 years, they have waged an economic war against the middle class. By means such as tax policies favoring capital over labor, wage stagnation, monopolization, and intergenerational inheritances, trillions have shifted from the bottom 90% to the top 1%. This wealth transfer is not a hardwired economic law or natural phenomenon but is a result of policies purchased by donations to politicians. Republicans pursue even more advantages and have put in place a Supreme Court that continually relaxes laws on campaign spending while upending laws meant to ensure fair voting practices and responsibility to constituents.

All these factors have produced voters who see that the fix is in on the economy. Young voters’ futures are sacrificed on the altar of the bottom line, and their rage is compounded by a hypocritical mouthing of platitudes about the land of opportunity and the upward mobility that used to be our common vision.

Republicans cynically assign blame to their opposition for losing faith in the American dream and our shared destiny. While Republicans are doing everything in their power to increase red districts and manipulate voters with floods of campaign spending, Americans are able to recognize their hollow promises. We must remember that there are more of us who want to fulfill the Founder’s vision of self-determination and individual opportunity than those who would surrender to strong man rule.
