Stay Alert: Virginia Braces for Another Round of Winter Weather

Published

on

Virginia is preparing for another blast of winter weather this weekend as snow and ice are expected to blanket much of the state. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) continues its efforts to keep roads as safe as possible, urging drivers to stay informed and plan ahead to avoid hazardous travel conditions.

VDOT crews began pretreating roads Wednesday with brine, a salt and water mixture designed to prevent ice from bonding to road surfaces. In addition to pretreatment, teams have been applying salt and sand throughout the week to address lingering impacts from the previous storm. With more snow expected Friday, crews are readying plows and other equipment to respond.

Despite VDOT’s efforts, drivers should not expect bare pavement during the storm. Roads will remain treacherous, and travel is strongly discouraged unless absolutely necessary.

Dangerous Conditions Expected

The storm is forecasted to bring widespread snow and ice, making travel risky across the Commonwealth. VDOT officials have emphasized the importance of cooperation from motorists, particularly after reduced traffic volumes during the last storm helped crews clear roads more efficiently.

“We’re grateful for the public’s cooperation during the previous storm,” VDOT stated. “As we face this next round of winter weather, your continued caution and reduced travel will help ensure the safety of both drivers and our crews.”

Temperatures are expected to drop sharply overnight, causing refreezing and creating slick, icy conditions even after snowfall ends.

Staying Informed and Prepared

For those who must travel, VDOT recommends checking road conditions through its free 511 mobile app or website, 511.vdot.virginia.gov. The app provides up-to-date information about traffic, road closures, and weather impacts. Drivers can also view traffic cameras and receive alerts about hazardous conditions.

To report hazardous road conditions, residents can contact VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center at 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623) or online at my.vdot.virginia.gov.

VDOT advises Virginians to follow these key tips during the storm:

  • Postpone non-essential travel.
  • Use extreme caution if driving is unavoidable.
  • Allow extra time to reach your destination.

As the state braces for another wintry weekend, motorists are encouraged to stay alert and prioritize safety. For more winter weather updates, visit VDOT’s dedicated weather page.
