Two local events separated by a week – the Front Royal Women’s Resource Center (FRWRC) 2017 “Kim South Girl Grants” and the Rotary-sponsored “JDRF Walk to Cure Juvenile Diabetes’ – will be held this month in downtown Front Royal.

Six Warren County middle school students will be recognized Saturday, Sept. 16, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., at the First Baptist Church Hall in a ceremony attended by former Rockland resident Mary Ellen South after whose daughter, Kim, the grants are named. They help the girls, aged 11 to 13, attend summer camp courses in the arts, training and tutoring. The grants were initiated in 2006.

The following Saturday, Sept. 23, the 16th annual “JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes” steps off from the same church hall following registration of walkers between 9 and 9:45 a.m. The walk, rain or shine, is two miles and is expected to again attract 200-350 people of all ages and raise more than $20,000.

Registrations and donations may be made online HERE or at the Wells Fargo Bank, Royal Avenue branch. Carol Dodson is a long time principal organizer and may be reached at carol.dodson@wellsfargo.com. She says the Northern Shenandoah Valley JDRF walk aims at “a world without Type 1 diabetes.”
