The Grand Opening of The Links: A Community Celebration

On a recent sunny afternoon, The Links celebrated its grand opening with much fanfare, drawing local leaders and community members to the scenic venue. Niki Foster, Executive Director of the Front Royal-Warren County Chamber of Commerce, was joined by Chamber Board President Byron Biggs and Front Royal Mayor Lori Cockrell to congratulate Richard Runyon, the driving force behind The Links.

Biggs kicked off the event with an appreciative nod to the beautiful drive leading to The Links, highlighting its picturesque setting. “It’s a beautiful place,” he noted, “so we’re happy to have them here.”

Mayor Cockrell echoed these sentiments, praising the venue’s appeal and potential for community events. “Bryon, you’re exactly right. It’s just gorgeous out here,” she said, commending Runyon for his dedication to the community and his lasting impact as a businessman and former golfer.

Runyon, a lifelong Warren County resident, expressed his commitment to the area. “I was born and raised in Warren County and believe in Warren County. I always have,” he said. “I am committed to this county, just like I always have been and continue to be, and now I have my own family, so that makes a big difference to me.”

The ceremony culminated with a ribbon-cutting, symbolizing the official opening of The Links. The crowd counted down, and with a snip, Runyon began a new chapter for the venue.

Following the ceremony, Mike McCool, publisher of the Royal Examiner, spoke with Runyon about the journey leading to this day and the future of The Links. Runyon shared insights into the extensive renovations and improvements made to the facility. “We’ve done a lot of course improvements and clubhouse enhancements,” he detailed. Notable updates include new flooring and a modern lighting system.

Runyon also mentioned a significant development involving the sale of the South Course Clubhouse to a private Montessori school. “We were very fortunate to sell the South Course Clubhouse and some acreage to a private Montessori school, which is, I think, a tremendous asset to this community,” he said.

Renamed as The Links Course of Shenandoah Valley Golf Club, the venue now boasts 45 holes, making it the largest course in the county. “We have 45 holes. It makes us the largest course in the county,” Runyon noted, emphasizing the unique features of the Links Course.

The Links is not just a golf destination. The venue is set to host various events, including weddings, banquets, fundraisers, and parties. The enhanced offerings include a new pub serving pizzas and featuring live music on Friday and Saturday nights.

Runyon also highlighted the strong community spirit in Rockland, an area he grew up in and is now reinvesting in. The Links employs over 150 people, making it one of the top employers in the county. “A lot of people call this place home,” Runyon said, emphasizing the venue’s role as a community hub.

As the interview wrapped up, Runyon expressed his gratitude to the community and his excitement for the future. “You’re always welcome here at the club,” he assured, inviting everyone to partake in the events and activities at The Links.
