Blue Ridge Wildlife Center Patient of the Week: Northern Raccoon

Published

on

Five releases in one day!

The first of our many young raccoon patients were released this past week onto a beautiful conservation easement thanks to one of our generous release-site supporters!

These five juvenile raccoons had spent months with us here at the Center growing up, learning to climb, forage, and acclimate to life outdoors.

We take great care in making sure our raccoon patients know they’re raccoons, and that people are NOT their friends, to make sure they have the best chance of survival once released.

These youngsters wasted no time finding a large hollow log that they all clambered into, taking time to explore and take in their surroundings.

With such vast resources before them, and in a remote area far from many human homes, we hope these kids have a safe area to be wild and free.

THANK YOU to all of our interns, staff, and volunteers who dedicated the many hours each day bottle-feeding, cleaning, and enriching these babies as they grew.

Raccoons are some of our longest in-care patients, and take a LOT of resources to provide proper care, including formula, produce, cleaning products, and personal protective equipment (PPE)!

Many of us here at BRWC, however, find raccoon releases to be some of the most rewarding to witness. We hope these photos from our Rehab Manager, Jess Andersen, explain why!

Looking for an easy way to help native wildlife? Become a monthly BRWC donor! For as little as $5/month, you can provide year-round, sustainable support that helps us fulfill our mission.
