Spring Break Adventures Await at Sky Meadows State Park

Published

on

Families looking for outdoor fun this spring break will find plenty to explore at Sky Meadows State Park during its Spring Break Week on Thursday, April 17, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event offers a full day of self-guided activities designed for kids, families, and curious minds of all ages. No registration is needed, and everything is included with the park’s standard $10 parking fee.

Instead of structured tours or timed events, Sky Meadows encourages visitors to set their own pace. One of the highlights is the Snowden Trail Tree Identification Hike, which helps budding naturalists recognize native trees. The downloadable guide adds an educational twist to a scenic stroll through the park.

Children can also dive into the world of exploration with Discovery Backpacks and Junior Ranger Booklets, both available at the park. These tools make nature learning hands-on, fun, and engaging—whether identifying insects, observing birds, or learning how to protect the environment.

For treasure hunters of all ages, geocaching is available throughout the park. Using GPS technology or smartphone apps, visitors can search for hidden containers called geocaches. It’s a modern-day scavenger hunt with a nature twist.

The Picnic Area will serve as the central hub for some of the park’s most family-friendly attractions. The Children’s Discovery Area is a Nature Explore Certified Outdoor Classroom, meaning it’s more than just a playground—it’s a learning environment built for creativity and discovery. With six interactive play stations, children can create art, build structures, play music, and even dig and crawl through nature-themed features. This area also includes a Kids in Parks TRACK Trail, a national initiative encouraging kids to get active outdoors while learning along the way.

Another standout feature is the Sensory Explorers’ Trail, a short and gentle 0.3-mile walk designed to stimulate the senses. Whether you’re listening to birds, touching bark, or smelling spring flowers, this trail encourages visitors to slow down and notice the world around them. It’s also built with accessibility in mind, featuring tools and guidance for visitors who are blind or visually impaired. An audio tour of the trail is available for download in advance.

All activities are designed to be safe and accessible for kids, families, and groups. There are no additional fees, and no registration is required—just show up ready to explore.

Sky Meadows State Park is located at 11012 Edmonds Lane in Delaplane, Virginia. For more details, visitors can call the park at 540-592-3556 or email SkyMeadows@dcr.virginia.gov. More information is also available online at www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/sky-meadows.

Whether your child dreams of becoming a Junior Ranger or just wants to dig in the dirt, Sky Meadows’ Spring Break Week offers something special for everyone.
