Winchester Long Course Invitational Set to Make a Splash June 20–22

Competitive swimming returns to the Shenandoah Valley as the Winchester Swim Team hosts its Annual Long Course Invitational Meet from June 20 through June 22 at the Jim Barnett Park pool. A long-standing summer tradition, the event is expected to draw 600 athletes from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and beyond.

Held at the 50-meter outdoor facility at Jim Barnett Park, located at 1001 E. Cork Street, the invitational is recognized as one of the largest and most exciting swim meets in the region. For decades, it has served as a showcase for some of the top young swimmers on the East Coast—many of whom have gone on to compete at the national level in high school, college, and club events.

The meet is sanctioned by USA Swimming and Virginia Swimming, ensuring top-level competition and strict adherence to safety and sporting regulations. Sanction No. VS-25-101 confirms that the meet meets all national guidelines, and the Winchester Swim Team, along with Winchester Parks and Recreation, will be implementing health and safety protocols throughout the weekend.

The outdoor pool at Jim Barnett Park features eight competition lanes with non-turbulent lane markers, varying in depth from 11 feet, 5 inches at the start end to 3 feet, 5 inches at the turn end. A semi-automated Dolphin Timing System by Colorado Timing will be used to track performances. Swimmers will also have access to a six-lane indoor pool throughout the meet for continuous warm-ups and cool-downs.

Safety will be a top priority. Certified lifeguards and aquatic staff will be on duty, and AEDs will be located near both indoor and outdoor guard offices. The facility is also equipped with a lightning detection system to monitor weather-related risks during the meet.

In a nod to growing accessibility and modern viewing convenience, the meet may be video streamed to allow friends and family who cannot attend in person to watch the races live.

But the weekend is not just for competitors. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and settle in for an exciting, family-friendly experience. Food trucks, raffles, and a welcoming atmosphere make this more than just a swim meet—it’s a community event filled with energy, talent, and local pride.

With a strong field of swimmers—many of whom are state and national champions—this year’s Winchester Long Course Invitational is shaping up to be one of the most competitive yet. For swimming fans, sports lovers, and families looking for a fun summer outing, this event promises three days of top-tier racing and community celebration.
