America 250 Celebrations Build Momentum in Early 2026

Published

As the nation approaches its 250th birthday, America 250 events are continuing to roll out across the country, with February and March 2026 marking an active period in the lead-up to the July 4 milestone.

America 250 is the official initiative of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, created by Congress in 2016 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The effort is led by America250.org, Inc. and is designed as a bipartisan, nationwide commemoration. Honorary co-chairs include former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, along with former First Ladies Laura Bush and Michelle Obama.

The initiative’s theme focuses on reflection and inclusion, looking honestly at the nation’s past, recognizing the contributions of all Americans, and encouraging conversation about the country’s future. Organizers describe the effort as both a celebration and a call to civic participation.

One of the initiative’s central goals is known as “350 by 250,” an effort to engage all 350 million Americans through storytelling, education, service projects, and innovation. Schools, cultural institutions, veterans’ groups, community organizations, and local governments are all encouraged to take part.

National festivities officially began on Memorial Day 2025 and will continue throughout 2026. In total, more than 50 national, regional, and local events are planned across all 56 U.S. states, territories, and jurisdictions. Activities range from historical exhibits and public conversations to service projects and cultural programs.

During February and March 2026, several key national events are scheduled as part of the broader celebration. These early-2026 programs are intended to build momentum ahead of the summer observances and help communities connect their local histories to the larger American story. A full and regularly updated calendar of events is available at america250.org/calendar.

Federal coordination is being handled by the White House’s Salute to America 250 Task Force, which is working with agencies and partners nationwide. One of its featured projects is a video series titled “The Story of America,” produced in collaboration with Hillsdale College, highlighting key moments and themes from the nation’s history.

As the semiquincentennial draws closer, organizers say the emphasis remains on participation. America 250 is designed not as a single event, but as a yearlong opportunity for Americans to reflect, learn, and engage—together—during a once-in-a-generation milestone.
