Relay for America Passes Through Leesburg Carrying Message of Unity Ahead of America 250

On one of the hottest days of the summer, a small group of runners moved through Leesburg carrying more than just an American flag — they were carrying a message.

Relay for America, a nonpartisan coast-to-coast relay, passed through Loudoun County as part of its nationwide journey leading up to America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

The relay’s concept is simple but symbolic: one American flag is carried mile by mile across the country, passed from runner to runner as communities come together to celebrate

the nation’s upcoming semiquincentennial.

Escorted through Leesburg by the Leesburg Police Department, local firefighters, and emergency personnel, participants continued their route despite temperatures climbing into the upper 90s.

Runners of all ages took turns carrying the flag, each completing a stretch of roadway before handing it to the next participant waiting ahead.

Along the route, passing motorists honked in support while spectators paused to wave and cheer the relay forward. Some runners carried the flag for only a short distance, while others logged several miles in the intense summer heat.

Unlike a traditional race, Relay for America is not focused on speed or competition. Organizers say the event is intended to serve as a moving symbol of unity — one that connects thousands of Americans through a shared journey across the country.

As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday next year, the relay hopes to remind people that despite political differences, geography, and backgrounds, Americans still share common ground.

One mile at a time, one runner at a time, and one handoff at a time, the flag continues moving forward.
