The laid-back teen’s guide to having a great time at prom

Published

on

Prom marks the end of an era and is arguably the biggest event in a teen’s high school career. While many look forward to it, the excitement surrounding the night can be fraught with anxiety. Here are some ways to keep things low key but still make sure you have a great time.

• Wear what makes you feel good. Prom is generally a dressy affair, so it’s probably best if you put a little effort into your look. However, this doesn’t mean you should be uncomfortable. If a ball gown isn’t right for you, don’t wear one. A cute cocktail dress or even a menswear inspired suit is perfectly appropriate for girls. The same goes for the boys. If you’re not comfortable in a tuxedo, there’s nothing wrong with wearing a pair of dress pants and a nice button down shirt — with or without a tie.

• Choose the right shoes. There’s definitely going to be lots of opportunities to cut the rug at prom. Make sure your shoes are comfortable enough to boogie all night. Plan ahead and break your shoes in well before the dance. If you prefer, you can even wear a pair of fashionable running shoes — as long as they’re not your stinky gym shoes.

• Go in a group. With “promposals” taking over the internet, it’s easy to feel pressured to find a date. The truth is, you don’t need a date to have a good time at prom. Think about going in a group or with your best friend. Besides, you’ll have more fun with people you’re comfortable with.

• Don’t forget to eat. While many schools serve dinner at prom, not all do. If this is the case at your school, make sure you eat before dancing the night away. You can reserve a table at a fancy restaurant or keep it simple by grabbing a burger at your preferred fast food place. Whatever you decide, make sure all the members of your group agree and that it works with everyone’s budget and dietary needs.

• Make sure you dance. Don’t worry about your dancing skills or looking silly. Even if you’re shy, you’ll have more fun letting loose on the dance floor than allowing your insecurities to keep you on the sidelines.

Above all, make sure you’re safe. You don’t need drugs or alcohol to have a good time. Instead, enjoy reminiscing about your high school career and making memories you’ll look back on in the years to come.
